(6:07) A little bit sweet and a little bit sour. That’s how we like our Jack Roses. Truth be told, we ♥ the Jack Rose. David A. Embury in his seminal cocktail book The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks touts the Jack Rose as one of the “six basic drinks,” a moniker bestowed on cocktails whose bases can be substituted for other spirits, thus creating new libations. Although his ratio of grenadine to lemon juice to applejack steered toward the sour side, we prefer to bump up the amount of grenadine and lessen the lemon juice. In our recipe, we call for real pomegranate grenadine, not the dark red syrup you pick up at your local grocery store. And what goes swimmingly with a Jack Rose? Why some spiced nuts. The sweetness from the dark brown sugar brightens your palate as it plays with the sea salt and the earthy spiciness of the mace and cumin. And with only one tablespoon of butter, you can feel a little better about serving your guests nice noshy nibbles with fewer calories. < less
