If you aren't in the habit of roasting vegetables, you're missing out on one of the easiest and tastiest ways to cook them. The time in the oven allows the vegetables to caramelize just a little; this means their natural sugars develop, so they are exceptionally flavorful. < less

Ah, the Manhattan. Named after the greatest place on earth. Its rich amber-red shimmer lights up any dark room. The anticipation of the first sip is high, so high in fact, that hardcore Manhattan tipplers will tell you instantly not only what kind of whiskey was used (rye, bourbon, blended), but what brand. For our Manhattan, we recommend rye whiskey (try Rittenhouse), sweet vermouth (try its cousin, Carpano Antica), and Angostura bitters. Plop in a marasche cherry rather than the neon-red maraschino cherries, and you have one hell of a cocktail. The Manhattan pairs perfectly with bacon-wrapped dates. The salty bacon clings to the sweet meaty dates, creating a tantalizing bite-sized appetizer sure to be a favorite at your next cocktail party. < less

Tequila is America's favorite spirit. No wonder. The Margarita has been lighting up our workaday lives for nearly seventy years. No matter how you shake it up, you know that a good time is just around the corner. This cocktail almost begs to be imbibed with a bowl full of tortilla chips and some salsa or guacamole. When making our Margaritas, we flip-flop between using silver and reposado tequilas. Silver, or plata, is smooth and not aged. (It is also known as white, or blanco). Reposado means "rested," and this tequila has been aged several months in oak barrels and has more bite. Both tequilas have distinct qualities and you should experiment to see which you like better. And, if you're weary of the frozen, fruit-flavored Margaritas that somehow always manage to impart a brain-freeze, you’re in luck: no blender required for these perfectly balanced potables. < less
