As a result of my macrobiotic reading , I've just realized something about our recent trip to Aspen for the Food & Wine Classic: we were very high. And being so high – in such thin air – is very yin. And so all these foodies and wine aficionados, who are not used to it, enter this very yin atmosphere, which creates a huge rush of expansive energy. This inspires chattiness, the meeting of new people, eating a lot, drinking a lot (although the definition of excess is expanded he...
So I'm thinking back to the other day, my salad at Fresh Corn in Westwood, and the stunning metaphysical implications of my adding brown rice to it. I wrote about how the salad was so ridiculously good and I was so ridiculously hungry, that I was in danger of inhaling the whole thing in about 40 seconds, and then bouncing up to the counter to order MORE MORE MORE food (like brownies and cookies and tart tatin)! Instead, some higher wisdom took over, and after just a few bites of the salad I g...
I'm loving my obsession (addiction?) with M Cafe de Chaya , and my obsession with macrobiotics in general. I've eaten about 60 percent of my meals at M Cafe over the past few weeks, I'm eating a lot of brown rice and whole grains, and I'm reading Jessica Porter's book, "The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics ", which I purchased at M Cafe. I picked up the book from the shelf, saw the author's name and said, "No, it couldn't be that Jessica Porter." I looked at the author's ...
Okay, so let's catch up here on some vegetables I've eaten recently but haven't mentioned yet. If you're reading this blog regularly (cough cough) you know I'm completely obsessed with M Cafe de Chaya in Los Angeles, especially the new location in Culver City. They serve macrobiotic food. I took my parents here this morning, who are in from out of town, and they reacted much better than I thought they would. Anyway, I'm addicted to M Cafe, so I'll be mentioning it a lot more. For now, let's b...
OK, macrobiotic, go! (We used to play a game in college called the 11 minute poetry game – you had 11 minutes to write a poem on a given subject – perfect, let’s play that with the subject "macrobiotic". It’s 6:30 now, go –
Macrobiotic means Rice and beans Is it more complicated than that? Sure, but not by much. So, why rice and beans? Well, first of all, let’s qualify, we’re talking brown rice here But that distinction shouldn&rsq...
I too was in Aspen this past weekend, for the Food & Wine Classic -- as was Corkage and Bar Stool Gourmet . I, for one, ate way too much good food, and drank way way too much good wine (and mescal and tequila). I can truly say that I am SICK of food (in the foodie sense of the word), and SICK of wine (which I should not have even been drinking, because of my rash !). I want to be macrobiotic. I’m going to eat every meal this week at M Café de Chaya , a genius macrobiotic caf...
