ALL RIGHT, M CAFE DE CHAYA!

The boys here at the office all went to M Cafe de Chaya for lunch today. These are guy guys, editors and camera people and techies, who like burgers and Taco Bell and fries as much as the next guy, for whom chicken is a staple, and they probably eat brown rice three times a year. In other words, not exactly macrobiotics. They all LOVED M Cafe. I'm telling you, this place rules, this is the best food in Los Angeles right now. There, I said it, I'm sorry, I said it. Adam, one of the guys, and...

WEEKEND OF CHEWING - IN REVIEW

Okay, so I spent the weekend really chewing my food. Like 50 times a bite. This was Jessica Porter's "weight loss tip number one" and I'm taking it very seriously. The idea has taken hold: chewing equals making the food accessible to my body, feeding me. And the inverse: if I don't really chew, I may be eating a huge amount while not giving my body and brain ANYTHING they can actually USE. So, yeah, I'm chewing. I'm liking it. I'm believing that I'm doing good for myself. Now plea...

WEIGHT LOSS TIP #1: CHEW IT UP!

So, yes, being 25 pounds overweight is my best symptom now, my most obvious bodily issue, the new wound leading the way to consciousness and healing. Now that my rash is almost completely healed, it no longer has the power to lead me to the light. I wrote about this the other day , and, of course, I asked hip chick Jessica Porter to read and respond. And, as always, I LOVE her response: “So here's my first weight-loss tip: Whatever you eat, you have to chew HALF of it fifty times a mo...

BOY, YOU'RE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT

All right, let's get real -- I was eating beautifully for a while because I was SCARED! I had a SYMPTOM! I was sick and I wanted to be well. I had a terrible rash . I was itchy. It covered me. It was disturbing and distressing. But, as Jessica Porter pointed out , it was not life-threatening (although I didn't know that for sure, believe me.) And so now that the rash appears to be resolving itself (I still have some marks and some small amount of itchiness, but it's pretty much gone), I have ...

DIALOGUE WITH A VERY HIP CHICK

So remember, I asked Jessica Porter, author of "Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics ", to please read my blog, this blog, all the posts, and tell me what the hell it's about ! Here is a part of her wonderful response. "You asked me something like... what's the blog about? In other words, what do I think the organizing principle is (assuming it's hard for the writer to see it). Hmmm... well, first the rash. And I think that's an excellent one, but as you note, it's one that h...

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

I e-mailed my college friend Jessica Porter a few weeks ago to tell her how much I loved her book, Hip Chick’s Guide to Macrobiotics . She called me yesterday from Toronto, and told me she’s moving to Los Angeles. Awesome. We got psyched about her doing a daily video blog for Eat Drink or Die, where every day she'd talk a bit about macrobiotics. What’s great about macrobiotics is that, by definition, it’s a BIG subject. Macrobiotics means, or at least implies, everythi...
