This blog is about eating alone at the bar at really nice restaurants. Sure, if I go out to a really nice restaurant with other people I'll still write about it here. But I really really really like eating alone at the bar. I like the focus. I like talking to the bartender and getting some inside scoop on the restaurant, the kitchen, the wait staff -- which usually the bartender will share, and which often you can even witness from the barstool. I love talking about the menu extensively before I order, and the bartender, unlike the waiter, isn't going anywhere. I like meeting new people who have the same idea I have and are also sitting at the bar. The bar is social. And yet I can bring a book if I like. If I want to take pictures of the food, it's not so intrusive at the bar. I can usually taste lots of wines by the glass before I decide on one. I can get a seat at the bar when the restaurant itself is booked solid. So... there you go! < less
